N To say that Steamer was retiring was the biggest mistake. ![]() By pushing Steamer to the side and coming up with an elaborate backstory, the Curve figured that would give the new mascot the best chance for success. They figured the best way to do that was to announce that Steamer would be retiring and turning over the lead mascot duties. N The obvious question: Why not just add a new mascot to the stable AND keep Steamer in a prominent role? Because the Curve devised a complex, multi-layered promotional plan, and they wanted the new mascot to get as much notoriety as possible. Had they just leveled with fans all along, more people might have understood the decision. Based on feedback from the last 36 hours, that appears to be a big mistake. This was always a big reason for the change, but Curve officials didn’t want to discuss it publicly because they didn’t want it to detract from the overall promotional plan of adding a new mascot. The Curve want a mascot that can do more of that stuff, and Steamer can’t. The costume is so big and cumbersome – and always has been, through several variations – that it prohibits the person wearing it from being able to do certain things, such as acrobatics. N The Steamer costume itself is a big problem. N The Curve wanted to unveil a new mascot to keep things fresh. Here’s what happened, based on what I’ve learned from Curve officials, and my commentary mixed in:
